Carlo Acutis – The New Young Saint

Published on April 17, 2025

Two of the constant messages of Pope Francis to young people are that God loves them and the Church needs them.  This is one of the reasons why it is important that this month (April) the church will canonise Carlo Acutis an Italian teenager who died in 2006.  He was a gamer and computer programmer who loved the Eucharist and will be the first millennial Saint. Carlo was born on May 3rd 1991 in London where his Father was working.  Sometime later he returned to Italy to Milan. Carlo from an early age had a special love for God though his parents were not especially devout.  After his First Communion he went to Mass as often as possible – he once remarked that there were queues in front of a concert, in front of a football match but I don’t see these queues in front of the Blessed Sacrament.  His mother said that the Eucharist was the centre of his life.  Such was the witness of faith as a child that he led adults to convert and be baptised.  Rajesh Mohur who worked for the Acutis family as an au pair when Carlo was a boy.  He converted from Hinduism to Catholicism because of Carlo’s witness.  He had taught Rajesh how to pray the rosary and told him about the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.  Rajesh was greatly impressed by the young Carlo’s love and concern for the poor. When Carlo became a teenager he volunteered to help the poor who came to the Capuchin day centre and hostel and he also helped Mother Teresa’ sisters of Charity in their work.  He was fascinated with computer coding. He used his computer and internet skills to help put together an exhibition on Eucharist miracles.  Carlo when he was fifteen was struck with a virulent and fatal form of Leukaemia.  In less than two weeks he was dead.  Before his death he offered his suffering to the Lord for the Pope and the Church.  He was buried in Assisi.  In October of 2020 the Church beatified the young Carlo.  Since his death his burial place has been a place of pilgrimage for thousands and a number of miracles have been attributed to him.  On Sunday April 27th Divine Mercy Sunday he will be canonised as a Saint.  A Saint inspires us to become the best version of ourselves.  Carlo is the first new saint of this millennium a teenage Saint.
